Stephen Hawking famously made high-minded theoretical physics palatable to the masses, and for that, people all over the world continue to revere the man as the icon he'll forever be remembered as. And we'll all still delight in seeing the many appearances he's made on television over the years.

Early Wednesday morning, Stephen Hawkingdied peacefully at the age of 76 at his home in Cambridge, England. Hawking suffered from ALS — commonly called Lou Gehrig's disease — for decades. The progressive disease gradually erodes all muscle control in the afflicted person. As such, Hawking utilized a computerized synthetic voice for many years, a voice that became inseparable from his visage on television, even in cartoons.

(Of note, Isaac Newton, Hawking and Data's holographic poker-mate, held the position from 1669 to 1702.) I was lucky enough to be in high school just when Hawking's book A Brief History of Time was making waves.

Over the many years that Hawking spent as a pop culture icon and revered scientist, he made numerous appearances on various television programs, most often those heavy on the science fiction.

Here are 5 of his most memorable:

5. Big Bang Theory

Chuck Lorre's wildly popular sitcom The Big Bang Theory sure loves its nerdy celebrity cameos, and Stephen Hawking's appearance on the show in 2012 was one of the biggest. Delightfully, Hawking appeared to critique Sheldon Cooper's paper on the Higgs boson and delivered this amazing own that shamed Sheldon:

Hawking
  • They played poker together on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Now Stephen Hawking, the English cosmologist and black hole maven who died last week, and Sir Isaac Newton, the Englishman who.
  • Incidentally, Stephen Hawking played a game of poker with Star Trek's Data – the fictitious future Lucasian Chair – along with fellow Chair Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein (the latter.

4. Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking hosted a truly 'stellar' educational mini-series all about aliens, time travel, and humanity's place in the universe. It's the perfect distillation of exactly how Hawking was able to make his impossible complex theories comprehensible to the masses while also making the science so compelling.

The intro sequence for the show also offers a heartwarming look at Hawking's optimism in the face of the disease that radically changed his life.

3. The Simpsons

Hawking first appeared on The Simpsons in 1999 in 'They Saved Lisa's Brain' and used an Inspector Gadget-style wheelchair to protect Lisa from Springfield's Mensa chapter. It began a long history with the show that continued for many years. Series creator Matt Groening even presented Hawking with a toy version of his character in yellow-skinned animated form at the 2004 British Comedy Awards.

Hawking later reappeared for more cameos in Seasons 16, 18, and 22 but not even rapping with Flight of the Conchords could top his first performance.

2. Futurama

He might've been a welcome addition to Springfield every time he appeared, but Stephen Hawking was arguably even more fun every time he graced Futurama with his presence. In the film The Beast with a Billion Backs, Hawking appeared as a head in a glass jar, which was customary for most celebrity guests on Futurama.

But Hawking's memorable first appearance in 'Anthology of Interest I' was as a member of a team guarding the space-time continuum that included the likes of Al Gore, Nichelle Nichols, and Gary Gygax.

1. Star Trek: The Next Generation

In one of Stephen Hawking's absolute best appearances on television, he was one of the only people to ever play himself on Star Trek.

During the Season 6 episode 'Descent,' the android Data plays poker against holographic recreations of Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking. Obviously the real Newton and Einstein weren't around to play themselves in hologram form, making Hawking's appearance one for the ages.

Stephen Hawking passed away today, peacefully at the age of 76. He was a brilliant and innovative scientist who forwarded our understanding of physics. He created groundbreaking theories, then replaced those with even better theories, and then made them all accessible enough for us to read them.

But he also had an endearing sense of humour. Stephen Hawking loved a good gag, and was always willing to make fun of himself — which is why there's a wealth of cameos in popular culture.

While his iconic, synthesised voice could be replicated, it often wouldn't have to be. He was happy to be in on the joke himself.

Many sci-fi shows pay homage for its own sake, but of course any sci-fi worth the 'sci' in its label will have a hard time avoiding one of the biggest names in astrophysics. It's common for sci-fi shows to explain how their universe got from our 21st century level of technology to where they are.

Such bouts of exposition might name famous scientists like Stephen Hawking with a comment like 'He was almost right, but not quite…' The technique serves to ground whatever fantastical elements that universe may have, and legitimise it. By rooting it in real science, it seems less like magic and more plausible.

Let's start with the one everyone should be familiar with…

‘The Simpsons' and ‘Futurama'

Stephen Hawking had so many cameos on these shows you'd think he had a red phone next to his bed with Matt Groening on the other end.

In actual fact, Hawking's daughter Lucy knew a scriptwriter working on The Simpsons, who said he'd love to include Hawking in a show sometime. In an older interview, Hawking said:

I accepted immediately. Because it would be fun, and because The Simpsons is the best thing on American television. The episode was very funny, and almost as many people know me through The Simpsons as through my science.

All of the times you saw Stephen Hawking on these shows were voiced by the real man. He was pleased with his depiction, which he described as 'good-humoured.'

‘Little Britain'

In one of Stephen Hawking's funniest skits, he invades Little Britain for a variation on its recurring sketch in which the man in a wheelchair can actually walk.

Though it turns out Stephen Hawking can do much, much more than just walk…

‘The Big Bang Theory'

Say what you want about TBBT, but it certainly doesn't lack Stephen Hawking cameos. The physicist appeared again, and again, and again, and again.

And then some more, and again, and again.

Online gambling companies uk. Simon Helberg (who plays Howard) was a little nervous about doing his Stephen Hawking impression while he was on set, but he was assured that Hawking was fine with it.

There was a large gap of several seasons during which Hawking had no cameos, but they came back in earnest from Season 8 onwards.

His unimpeachable status as an authority on astrophysics means these cameos often involve deflating Sheldon's supermassive ego.

That's a cameo well spent.

He was even happy to introduce TBBT panel at ComicCon.

‘Star Trek: The Next Generation'

Hawking may have appeared as a hologram in the episode Descent, but his performance was very real. In an effort to see how the greatest human minds would behave in the same room together, Data assembles Sir Isaac Newtown, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking for a poker game.

Who can blame him? We'd do the same.

The hand sees Stephen Hawking squaring off against Albert Einstein.

Hawking played himself in the episode, and a tour of the set allowed him to sit in the captain's chair. When he saw the Warp core, he is reported to have said, 'I'm working on that.'

‘Stargate: Atlantis'

Season 5 of Atlantis had a later episode named Brain Storm, several astrophysicists of renown gather to witness the technological achievement of Dr. Malcolm Tunney. Unfortunately Hawking was played by an actor in this episode though the nod is nice.

The device on show is able to cool the planet, countering climate change. At the black tie event, we can see real science personalities such as Neil deGrasse Tyson and Bill Nye, the latter of whom helps save the day when the climate cooling device malfunctions.

Stephen Hawking is seen from behind in his chair, as the device is unveiled.

As it happens, those are the funniest anyway.

Vale, Stephen Hawking. A titan of science, a pillar of comedy, and an exemplar of not taking oneself too seriously.
